Open them in visio, then export to PNG, JPG, GIF, whatever real image format you prefer. Then you can upload them through the browser under the templates menu "Device Image Management" OR you can copy them directly to the server under "pictures" I think, it could be "drawings".

Can somebody please tell me how to import Visio .vss files into the opendcim database. Such as the file type, directory etc...

You got it right the first time Wilbur, default location it
/var/www/dcim/pictures

Only Visio really works with Visio files well. So you have to find a way to
feed JPG, PNG or GIF images to openDCIM. Like Wilbur said, either export it
(I suggest exporting it as PNG with a high DPI and then use something like
Irfanview to resize and color reduce it down to what you need) or you can
take a screen shot/snip. Screenshot/snip is usually the last resort as it
has the lowest quality.

Here's a quick overview of what I do, it's what works for me. I search
Google Images for a nice high quality image of the front and back,
preferably something that's square in the image and the viewing angle is
straight on (not at an angle). I then save the image to my Win7 machine,
open it in Irfanview. Then I crop it so there's no white space around the
actual device, then resize it down to about double the size it will show up
in openDCIM. It's very much TLAR (that looks about right). Then I decrease
the color depth to 256. Might sound old school but you don't need 16
billion color levels to show a postage stamp size image of a server that
you are only going to look at for half a second, besides, simply doing this
can dramatically cut down on the file size and thus the load time of pages.
Lastly, I choose to save my images in JPG with about 70% quality. Most of
my images are between 5K and 40K, they load quite quickly this way.

Fast page loads are very useful when you have a lot of work to do in there,
but also for MAF (manager approval factor).

If you do have your image templates in Visio, selecting the image and copy
will allow you to paste it into the graphics program of your choice. For
simplicities sake, usually just use MS Paint. Then as Zack does - trim
whitespace, save as PNG or JPG. Keep image size in pixels and file size
for load times in mind.

As long as you keep the whitespace to a bare minimum and aren't going crazy on the resolution you can run your images through the kraken and get them to load faster, generally without losing any quality.
